St. Benedict Sisters leaving mission on Red Lake
by Megan Rinerson, WJON.com

REDLAKE -- For 121 years over 200 Sisters from the St. Benedict Monastary in St. Joseph have lived on Red Lake Indian reservation. But, soon their mission will be over. The Sisters are part of the St. Mary's Mission and will be leaving in July.

Sister Owen Lindblad wrote a history on the mission. She says the Native Americans were a catholic group and brought their faith with them when they migrated to Red Lake from Madeline Island.

Lindblad says there are currently five Sisters on the reservation. However, they don't have the staff to keep them there anymore.

The mission is part of the Crookston diocese and they will continue to operate the catholic school and programs.

If you would like to learn more, a celebration of longevity will be held at the St. Mary's Church on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.

AUDIO: Sister Owen Lindblad speaks with WJON.com's Megan Rinerson about the history of the Sisters at the Red Lake Reservation.
