by Jim Maurice, WJON.com

ST. JOSEPH -- The social networking sites Facebook and Twitter helped the College of St. Benedict raise over $116,000 in just 24-hours this week.

Gifts ranged from $10 to $5,000.

St. Ben's finished second out of over 3,000 non-profit organizations in the first ever "Give to the Max" day.

Vice President of Institutional Advancement Stuart Lang says they had no idea what to expect on Tuesday, but it became clear early that event was generating a lot of excitement.

Lang says St. Ben's Facebook page and Twitter account were both very active during the campaign. He says the money will go into their scholarship fund.

The on-line campaign raised a total of $14 million for organizations across the state.
