Diesel thieves strike in Benton County
by The Associated Press
ROYALTON -- Diesel thieves have struck again in central Minnesota.
This time, about 700 gallons of diesel fuel were stolen from trucks at neighboring businesses in Royalton.
With fuel prices rising, diesel thefts are on the increase around central Minnesota. It's the first reported diesel thefts in Benton County this year.
Sand's Repair and Chrome Shop had about 500 gallons stolen. Helena Chemical Company had an estimated 200 gallons stolen. All together, the stolen fuel was worth more than $3,200.
Authorities don't know if the thefts are related to similar crimes in surrounding areas.
Both businesses are looking into using anti-siphon filters and locking gas caps to prevent future thefts. At Helena, the company used to fuel its trucks at night so they'd be ready to go in the morning. Now they're fueling the trucks in the morning so they sit empty all night.
