Local sweet corn ready for picking
by Jim Maurice, WJON.com
UNDATED -- Good news for those of you who have been patiently waiting for fresh homegrown sweet corn.
Mark Chmielewski owns Stoney Brook Farm near Foley. He says they started picking the first of their 500 acres of corn today (Thursday) -- which is about 10-days behind schedule.
He says some of their early varieties are ready now. And he says his repeat customers definitely have their favorites. However, don't ask him which varieties he plants -- he says that's top secret information.
Chmielewski says, like most crops, they're behind because of the cool wet spring.
Their picking season usually runs until about Labor Day.
He sells most of his sweet corn to local grocers Coborn's and Cub.
