Delano building levee to hold back Crow River
by The Associated Press
DELANO -- City crews in Delano are building a temporary levee and volunteers are stacking sandbags with hopes of holding back the rising Crow River.
Mayor Joe McDonald says the new flood forecast from the National Weather Service is a foot higher than the previous one, so on Friday the city was hustling to raise its levees.
He says city officials thought they were prepared on Thursday when the crest was predicted at 19.6 feet, but now that's been raised to 20.5 feet on Saturday night.
McDonald says the temporary levee will protect downtown from up to 21.5 feet of water. He says a downtown business along the river and a few homes have already received some water damage.
If the Crow River hits 20.5 feet, it will be the second-highest level recorded by the weather service.
