NEW BRIGHTON -- Police in New Brighton say a 21-year-old man charged with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his ex-girlfriend's mother had considered more shootings, and he was armed to carry them out.
Records show Corey Lee Gaustad had two handguns and more than 100 bullets.
The victim was shot Thursday afternoon and died that evening at a hospital.
Police say her 17-year-old daughter was also shot at when the two were ambushed outside their New Brighton apartment.
According to police, Christine Rose Nguyen died because she put herself in Gaustad's way to protect her daughter.
The criminal complaint that also charges Gaustad with attempted murder says he considered shooting up a clothing store where he thought the former girlfriend worked, and creating a hit list. But police in Rochester found his vehicle and arrested him at a hotel Friday morning.
Gaustad is held on $2 million bail.
