Lee Olson
Please tell us a little bit about yourself and your family.
I have been married to my wife Judy for 26 years. We have three sons all of whom are Foley graduates and athletes. The oldest, Mitchell, is also a graduate of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City and is currently working as a computer engineer in Rapid City, South Dakota. Eric is also a graduate of the School of Mines and Technology and is currently working on his PHD in chemistry at the University of Minnesota. John will graduate from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota this spring with a degree in athletic training and will enroll in optometry school next fall.
What experiences do you have that prepares you for public office?
I graduated from Bemidji State University in 1969 and spent the next 34 years teaching business education in the Foley Public School system. For sixteen of those years I also coached football and wrestling at the high school level along with working with the little kids Saturday programs. For a number of years I was involved with Foley Jaycees, holding many offices including President. I also was involved with the Foley Booster Club and held office in that organization. Since 1974, I have owned in partnership a small construction company in which we construct residential, agriculture and light commercial post framed buildings.
Why did you decide to run for this office?
I see a need for the school district to improve student learning, student achievement, and student expectations. I have always been proud of our Foley graduates and it makes me sad to see even one leave high school without the tools, foundation, and personal expectations to be a successful contributor to society. Also, fancy named programs, beautifully constructed buildings, and a large spending budget do not necessarily guarantee student success. I see a need for the district to budget wisely and to spend effectively.
Top three issues you would tackle, if elected?
Improve student test scores, raise student academic expectations and make a conscious effort to spend wisely.
